Why the Best Candidates Aren't Applying (and How to Reach Them)

For specialized and senior roles, the people you most want to hire are usually busy doing good work somewhere else. They aren't checking job boards, so a posting alone won't reach them.

Who passive candidates are

Passive candidates are employed professionals who aren't actively job hunting but would consider the right move. They tend to be:

  • Performing well and valued by their current employer

  • Selective about what they'd leave for

  • Responsive to a direct, specific conversation about a real opportunity

How to reach them

Search beyond applicants. Build a target list by company, title, industry and location, then go find the people in those seats.

Make the first message specific. Name the role, why it fits their background, and the details they care about, like scope, team and compensation range. Generic outreach gets ignored.

Follow up. Many good candidates reply to the second or third message, not the first.

Screen before you submit. Confirm interest, fit and compensation expectations on a call before a hiring manager spends time on an interview.

The payoff

Sourcing passive candidates takes more effort than posting a job, but it produces a shortlist you can't get any other way. HireTalent RPO has done this work since 1999, when we pioneered internet-based candidate sourcing. We phone screen every candidate and send 2 to 4 qualified people per search, with an 85%+ submit-to-interview rate.

Need to reach people who aren't applying? Schedule a call.
